When it comes to sink installation, you have a significant decision to make about the type of installation and the design of your sink. We’ll break down the standard options and the benefits of each.
Types of Installations
Top-Mount
Top-mount sinks are the most common type of kitchen sink. They are called this because they sit on top of your counter. The sink’s weight sits entirely on the rim. This installation is cost-effective and straightforward, but you can have trouble with cleaning since the rim can trap crumbs.
Undermount
These sinks are attached to your counter from below using clips. Undermount sinks offer a sleek design and allow you to sweep food into the sink with ease. The downside is that they tend to cost more and are limited in size.
Integrated Sink
An integrated sink is made as one connected piece with the countertop. These are less common because they require custom manufacturing. There is no issue with rims since the counter will seamlessly flow into the sink.
Types of Sink
You also have to choose the design of your sink. There are many options depending on how you envision using your new sink.
Single Basin
This sink has only one bowl. You won’t be able to divide your plates into two sections, but you’ll likely have higher compacity. Essentially, you’re trading some flexibility for the largest possible bowl size.
Double Basin
This sink has two bowls allowing you to divide your dishes. You can wash in one basin and dry in the other. Perhaps you can soak dishes in one and wash them in the other. You can fulfill multiple needs with this type of sink, but the bowls may be too small to wash large pots and pans.
